Spring has sprung, Frog spawn

It appears the local frogs have decided its time to wake up & make some babies.  We noticed some frog spawn in one of the ponds the other morning and over night it seems to have tripled, both ponds now also have lots of frogs in amplexus, that is, the males gripping on for the time of their life, positioned so as to be able to fertilise the eggs as soon as they’re released.  This may be for a couple of days so hopefully we wont get any hard frosts this week, but judging by the forecast we may do.  If it looks bad i’ll move some spawn to a warmer spot.

Amplexus

Mating frogs, Hailsham, East Sussex, UK
A sure sign that spring has arrived. These frogs are seen in a state of amplexus with the male holding on to the female behind the front legs and gripping on tightly. This position may last several days and ensures the male is in the ideal position to fertilise her eggs.
